BackFormer Manchester United failure Diego Forlan could make a shocking return to Old Trafford in the summer. The Uruguayan striker played for United between 2001 and 2004 but only scored 17 goals in 95 appearances in those three seasons.
Forlan moved to Villareal in August 2004 and turned his career around. He became La Liga’s top scorer with 25 goals and shared the European Golden Boot with Thierry Henry. In 2007 Forlan joined Atletico Madrid where he has since scored 96 goals in 188 appearances for the club.
Now the 31-year-old forward has fallen out with his manager, Quique Sanchez Flores and the Madrid club are prepared to sell the striker for around £9 million.
The Daily Mail reports that Manchester United are interested in bringing the striker to Old Trafford again, which is surprising considering his poor form during his spell there. However there may be room in the squad if Michael Owen leaves the Red Devils as expected.
Tottenham Hotspur are also thought to be interested although they failed to land the player with a bid of £17 million in January. Forlan has only scored eight goals this season and the Old Trafford fans will hope that if he does come back that he can show some of the form that saw him receive the Golden Ball for best player at the 2010 World Cup and become joint top scorer of that tournament with five goals.
Diego Forlan may be back this summer
