World cup scouting (#407)

Here is a thread for you to share your opinions on which of the stars on display in South Africa should and could be making their way to Old Trafford next season.

Fw: World cup scouting (#408)

Player name: Sergio Aguero

National team: Argentina

Club team: Atletico Madrid

Position: Forward/Striker

Age: 22

Match scouted: Argentina 2-0 Greece, 22 June 2010

Key moment: There were many, the best being when he turned past the Greek centre-backs and went on to strike a cleverly crafted shot that nearly went in.

Strengths: He's a flair, unpredictable, good ability to find space, and good at picking off a shot.

Weaknesses: There aren't many, although he could improve on his decision making at times. There were a couple of instances where he could have off-loaded
the ball instead of taking on his man.

Suitability: He is very versatile, so he could play behind Wayne Rooney, or alongside him.

Estimated cost: He wouldn't come cheaply. He would probably cost around £30million. But I think with our record of developing young talent, he could double that value within a few years in the Premier League.

Fw: World cup scouting (#409)

Player name: Diego Benaglio

National team: Switzerland

Club team: VFL Wolfsburg

Position: Goalkeeper

Age: 26

Match scouted: Chile 1-0 Swizterland, 21 June 2010

Key moment: Switzerland's best player on the day, the Wolfsburg goalkeeper made several key saves in the first half to deny Vidal, Carmona, and Sanchez but unfortunately was ultimately unable to keep a clean sheet.

Strengths: Benaglio has very good handling skills. He makes the most of it, coming off his line frequently to claim crosses and tries to dominate his area. He is a consistent performer. He was brilliant to keep a clean sheet against Spain, and unlucky not to do the same against Chile.

Weaknesses: Needs to improve on his distribution, particularly his kicking, as he doesn't get enough distance on his goal kicks.

Suitability: He would be the perfect replacement for Edwin van der Sar as our first-choice goalkeeper.

Estimated cost: Benaglio's stock will rise after his performances against Spain and Chile, so Wolfsburg will demand a fee in excess of £10million to part with their Swiss keeper.

There's one little Mexican that I would be dying to get, but fortunately for us...we've already signed him! What a finish against France and that strike against Argentina too. Him and Rooney up front next season could be fearsome partnership.

We should get Ghana's Gyan. He's one of the top scorers in the World Cup and we could get him for less than 15million considering he signed for Rennes for £8m.
